I can host unlimited 40-minute meetings without any cost, which is perfect for testing the platform or for small startups like mine that need a budget-friendly conference solution. Google Calendar Support

What I Didn’t Like About Zoom

Too Many Subscriptions and Add-Ons

I appreciate that Zoom offers a reasonably priced starter subscription, but I’ve found that one plan often isn’t enough for my needs. Most services require additional subscriptions or add-ons, which can vary significantly based on the number of attendees I plan for. While the starter plans are affordable, the larger tiers can be quite steep. For example, hosting a webinar for up to 10,000 attendees can end up costing several thousand dollars a month. Although I could potentially recoup this investment, the high initial cost can be a major barrier for small businesses just getting started. 

Lack of Comment Control

When hosting online events, I consider the live chat feature vital for engagement. However, I’ve noticed that while Zoom provides some customization, it cannot delete inappropriate comments during a live session. Although the platform takes inappropriate behavior seriously, the response time can be frustratingly slow. This delay is particularly concerning for public events, where a single disruptive participant can negatively impact the experience for everyone else involved.

Zoombombing

I've unfortunately experienced Zoombombing firsthand, where uninvited individuals crash a conference call and often engage in disruptive, inappropriate behavior. This trend became more common during the COVID-19 pandemic as many businesses transitioned to online meetings. I believe some organizations underestimate the importance of securing their calls with strong passwords.

HD Video Is Not the Standard

In an age where 4K video quality is becoming the norm, I was surprised to find that Zoom still operates primarily in 720p for the current speaker. While this resolution may suffice for most meetings, I’ve come to expect at least 1080p as a baseline standard, especially in 2020 and beyond. This discrepancy in video quality can be disappointing, particularly for those of us who rely on visual clarity for presentations and collaborative discussions. 

Inconsistent Cloud File Sizes

Each subscription plan has different limits on cloud storage capacity, and while most of my recordings are around 1 GB, I’ve seen instances where files are significantly larger. This inconsistency can be a headache, especially for users with limited storage options or slower internet connections, as it complicates the process of sharing and accessing recordings after meetings.

Basic Plan (1 user, Free) 

As a solo user, I appreciate Zoom's Basic plan because it offers essential features at no cost. With meetings lasting up to 40 minutes and the ability to host up to 100 participants, it covers most of my day-to-day communication needs. I also use team chat, which makes staying connected with colleagues easy. The inclusion of a basic version of clips and docs allows me to share short videos and up to 10 documents, and the whiteboard feature lets me brainstorm on three editable boards. 

Pro Plan (1-9 users, $12.49/month/user annually) 

When my needs grew beyond basic, the Pro plan was a natural upgrade. I love that I can hold meetings up to 30 hours long, which is great for extended training sessions. The AI companion adds a smart layer to my work, helping me manage tasks more efficiently. I also appreciate the 5GB of cloud storage for saving recordings and unlimited video clips. 

Business Plan (10-250 users, $18.32/month/user annually)

As my team expanded, the Business plan became a perfect fit. It allows me to host up to 300 participants per meeting, which is a big boost for larger conferences. The unlimited whiteboards are excellent for collaboration, and the scheduler keeps meetings on track effortlessly. The added features like SSO and managed domains provide extra security and management options, making this plan ideal for medium to larger-sized teams. 

Business Plus Plan (10-250 users, $22.49/month/user annually)

Upgrading to the Business Plus plan gave me even more flexibility. I especially value the expanded cloud storage of 10GB, which helps me keep all my important recordings and documents secure. The unlimited phone option with regional coverage has been incredibly helpful for international communication. I also use translated captions for multilingual meetings, making it easier to connect with global partners.
